EMC can offer cost-effective web hosting services through a Virtual Dedicated Server (VDS) web-hosting solution. Through the VDS solution, EMC clients can have the benefits of a dedicated server at the cost of a shared server environment. A VDS exists when a dedicated server is divided into multiple isolated servers through a software technology called Sphera. Through this technology, clients may have their own disk and network space, bandwidth, RAM, CPU, and operating system. This means that even if another client's application crashes, other client's running applications are safe since they run independently from one another.

In contrast, a dedicated server, although just as robust is far too expensive, on the other hand a shared server hosting does not provide for a stable environment since all hosting clients are sharing the same hardware as well as software system within the shared server. If one particular hosting client uses more CPU or bandwidth than the other clients, it would cause a slow down of services for the entire clients hosted on the shared server. This means that if the server crashes, all hosting clients experience downtimes. Files can also be accessed by unauthorized users.
